Robert Kasimir

Robert Kasimir
(1914 - 2002)

Robert Kasimir was the son of Austrian
artists Luigi Kasimir and Tanna
Kasimir-Hoernes. Born in Vienna in 1914,
he was taught to draw by his grandfather,
Alois Kasimir. After initially training to
become an architect, he studied under
Professor Hans Frank at the Academy for
Graphic Art in Vienna.

Early in his career, before establishing
himself, he signed etchings with the
pseudonym "F.O. Robert", and also
produced oil paintings, signed "R.K.". In
1938, he visited the United States to study
at the Academy of Fine Arts in
Philadelphia. That trip provided the basis
for a series of American etchings,
including the Capitol and Yale University,
which were completed upon his return to
Vienna.

Drafted to into the army later in 1938 as a
war reporter, he produced many drawing
during the war. However, the originals
were destroyed during the bombing of
Berlin, and only photographs remain.
In 1961, Robert Kasimir opened his own
printing shop in Vienna. In addition to his
own etchings, he produced copies of
etchings by his parents, Luigi and Tanna.
Following his father's death in 1962 he
signed Luigi's etchings "n.1.Luigi Kasimir"
("n.1." is an abbreviation for "Nachlass,"...
"from the estate of..."). Following his
mother's death in 1972 he signed her
etchings, "n.1.T.K. Hoernes."
