Luigi Kasimir
(1881 - 1962)
Born in 1881 in Pettau, Luigi Kasimir
pioneered sophisticated color etching. The
son of painter Alois Kasimir, he studied
under William Unger at the Vienna
Academy of Art where he was introduced
to color etching. It was also at the Vienna
Academy of Art that he met his future
wife, Tanna Hoernes, who herself became
a renowned artist.
Before Kasimir, black and white etchings
had been popular for hundreds of years
and the few color etchings that were
produced were usually handcolored, or
created from a single plate. Kasimir
pioneered the use of multiple plates, often
as many as 6. He began with an original
sketch, usually in pastel, transferring the
design by hand to the plates. The plates
were printed one after the other, again
by hand, to create the unique finished
individual.
Luigi Kasimir's etchings are in many
galleries around the world, including the
Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.
After his death in 1961, his son Robert
printed further copies of his original
etchings. These copies are signed
"n.1.Luigi Kasimir", representing the estate
of (Nachlass in German).
At Zyt Gallery, we have a collection of
both the very rare original etchings and
copies printed by Robert Kasimir. Click
