Herta Czoernig

Herta Czoernig
(1886 - 1970)

Herta Czoernig was born in Klazenfurt on
March 13, 1886, the daughter of Baron
Karl von Czoernig, Finance Minister of
Austria. She studied first at the Art School
for Women in Vienna and later in Weimar
Germany. She was taught to etch by
Professor Ludwig Michalek.

Although she also painted both oils and
watercolors, it is her etchings that became
most popular. Her etchings of the homes
and churches of composers, each with a
couple of bars of music are especially
admired by lovers of music and Vienna.
Herta Czoernig is considered to be the last
topographic Viennese artist. Indeed, some
of her etchings are the only surviving
record of Viennese streets and houses
destroyed during World War 2.
The Historical Museum of the city of
Vienna owns many of her pictures as does
the Austrian National Library.
