Michael Joseph

Michael Joseph

"I have always meant for my paintings to
have lives of their own. I hope the
elements of my work fit together in a way
that brings the viewer to a composed, yet
alive, state of mind."

Michael Joseph's paintings cover a wide
range of compositions in oil, using a bright
palette to depict life on the West Coast.
The artist draws not only from his
imagination, but from his life. He moves
from plain air landscapes to figure studies
with ease, using light to reveal forms.

A former Vietnam combat illustrator,
Michael studied painting with Joan Brown
at the San Francisco Art Institute in the
early 1960s. In 1967, he graduated from
the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma,
Washington, where he won the Chi Omega
Award Scholarship twice in 1965 and 1966.
In 1985, he received the Mayors Purchase
Award in Beverly Hills.
Today, Michael has studios in Gilroy and
Palo Alto. His works are held in collections
of the Beverly Hills City Hall, the Taft
Entertainment Company, The Fluor
Corporation, The Bank of Newport, and in
many private collections around the world.
