John Haines was born in Syracuse NY in 1963, and studied at the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles in the mid 1980s. During this time, he worked for David Hockney, and was studio assistant to Sam Francis. Between periods living in Europe, he has since studied stone carving and black-smithing at Cabrillo College, Santa Cruz and worked with master blacksmith Toby Hickman at Waylan Smithy in Petaluma.
Currently based in Sonoma County, John's work has been featured in many exhibitions in both Europe and the United States and in a number of publications, including the San Francisco Chronicle and Santa Rosa Press Democrat.
