Deborah Cushman

Deborah Cushman

"I was fortunate to study at UC Berkeley in
the early 1970s under Joan Brown and
Elmer Bischoff. Both were founding
members, along with Richard Diebenkorn
and David Park of the 'Bay Area Figurative
Movement'. Under the influence of
Bischoff in particular, who I consider my
art mentor, my work gradually evolved
from realism to large-scale abstract
expressionism."

After receiving her MFA from Columbia in
the late 1970s, Deborah painted in New
York City for several years and exhibited
her large abstract works throughout the
area. Slowly she gravitated to textile
fashion design and saw her original
designs featured in the windows of Fifth
Avenue department stores and on "Good
Morning America".

Deborah returned to painting, her true
passion. When the East Coast landscape
painter Wolf Kahn saw some of her
paintings at a New York City exhibition
and commented favorably on them, this
small incident proved to be the impetus
she needed to become a plein air painter.
She returned home to Sonoma County in
1995.

Deborah's work has won several awards,
and has been displayed in exhibitions
nationwide.
